These spike bull elk were photographed in Estes Park in Colorado. While photographing a larger bull, I noticed some young spike bulls messing around in the tress and bushes nearby. One of them was really thrashing his head around in the branches, which caught my attention. Usually spikes don't get that aggressive at thrashing the brush around like larger males do during the rut. Another spike was standing there watching his friend. When the bull moved back out of the brush, I noticed it had a rope stuck around his head and antlers. It wasn't hurning him in any way, it was just very annoying to him and he was trying to break it loose by thrashing around in the bushes and tree limbs. Both bulls soon walked off and went out into the grass to feed. The bull strutted around for a while like he was trying to show his new headgear to the other elk nearby. When the bull drops his antlers in late winter or early spring, this should come loose and set him free again.
