Artist's Description
This is a killdeer bird that I photographed in Yellowstone National Park. This one was pretending to be injured when we got about ten yards from it. The killdeer will pretend it is injured to lure you away from their nest to protect their young. This also lures animals away as they try to make a meal out of the injured bird. Once they lure the danger far enough away from their nest, they will then fly away and act normal again. Since I saw this killdeer pretending to be injured, I knew we must have gotten close to her nest, so we stopped and headed the other way to stay away from any nests in the area.
